Bobby Womack’s first tune in almost two decades will no doubt strike a bassy chord with fans of James Blake’s dub-inflected R&B. It’s a very modern production, courtesy of Damon Albarn, but Womack’s wounded rasp rises through the low end thump—a curling, pleading call with no response.
What’s interesting is the fact that XL recordings will be releasing Womack’s upcoming LP, The Bravest Man in the Universe. They’re the same bunch of folks who marshalled the Gil Scott-Heron and Jamie xx collaboration last year, as well as the late poet’s comeback effort, I’m New Here, the year before.
This is “Please Forgive My Heart” from The Bravest Man in the Universe, slated for release in June.
